A Nation on the Brink of Collapse

Sudan’s civil war, now well into its second year, has become one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies. What began in April 2023 as a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has spiraled into widespread devastation, displacing millions and destabilizing the Horn of Africa.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 14 million Sudanese have been forced from their homes. Entire cities — including Khartoum, El Geneina, and Nyala — have been reduced to rubble. Hospitals, schools, and basic infrastructure are collapsing under the strain of constant warfare.

The UN and human rights observers warn that the conflict has taken on ethnic and sectarian dimensions, especially in the Darfur region, where communities such as the Masalit have suffered horrific violence. Independent organizations have described incidents that may amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity, prompting global concern.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Across Sudan

The civilian toll continues to grow as food shortages, displacement, and disease outbreaks worsen. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that more than 20 million Sudanese face acute food insecurity, with several areas on the verge of famine.

Aid convoys struggle to reach those in need, hindered by insecurity and damaged infrastructure. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that the humanitarian space in Sudan is “shrinking by the day.”

Entire communities have fled to neighboring Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt, creating a regional refugee crisis. Camps near the Chadian border are overwhelmed, with limited sanitation, water, or medical services. The UN has described the displacement as “the largest and fastest-growing crisis in Africa.”

International Community Urges Restraint and Dialogue

Amid the ongoing devastation, global powers and regional stakeholders have renewed calls for de-escalation and peace talks. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the African Union, has been vocal in urging both sides to return to negotiations.

UAE officials have repeatedly emphasized the need for a Sudanese-led political process, humanitarian access, and regional cooperation. The UAE government has also rejected reports suggesting direct involvement in the conflict, reaffirming its commitment to neutrality and peacebuilding in the region.

“The UAE continues to support all efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in Sudan,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. “We call on all parties to prioritize dialogue and the protection of civilians.”

The UAE has provided humanitarian aid through international agencies and regional partners, delivering medical supplies and food assistance to displaced families both inside Sudan and in neighboring countries.

Accusations and Clarifications

Earlier in 2025, Sudan’s government filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging that foreign funding and arms shipments had contributed to the conflict. Although some reports referenced the UAE, the ICJ dismissed the case in May 2025, citing a lack of jurisdiction under the Genocide Convention.

The UAE welcomed the court’s decision, describing the claims as baseless and politically motivated. Emirati diplomats reaffirmed that the UAE “does not provide arms or funding to any party in the Sudan conflict” and that its involvement has been strictly humanitarian.

Observers say the ICJ’s ruling underscores the importance of avoiding politicized accusations and instead focusing on coordinated global efforts to end the suffering of Sudan’s civilians.

Regional and Global Reactions

The humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan has drawn condemnation and concern from across the world.

  • The United Nations Security Council has called for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access.
  • The African Union continues to pursue mediation efforts through its High-Level Panel on Sudan.
  • Neighboring countries, including Chad and Ethiopia, are appealing for international support as they struggle to host hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Meanwhile, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have collectively urged restraint and emphasized their shared goal of regional stability. The UAE, as a key GCC member, has used its diplomatic influence to encourage calm and discourage external interference that could deepen Sudan’s divisions.

Sudan’s Civilian Population Caught in the Crossfire

The conflict’s human impact remains staggering. Reports from Darfur indicate entire villages have been burned, while survivors describe widespread displacement and trauma. International human rights organizations have urged both the SAF and RSF to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law.

“Every day of fighting means more lives lost, more families torn apart, and more children without access to food or education,” said Martin Griffiths, the UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

Medical organizations have documented widespread shortages of supplies, while women’s groups warn of rising sexual violence. Despite the risks, local volunteers and international NGOs continue working in crisis zones to deliver aid and rescue civilians.

Economic Collapse and Resource Competition

Sudan’s once-promising economy has disintegrated. Inflation has soared, and the Sudanese pound has plummeted. Agriculture — a key source of livelihoods — has nearly halted due to conflict and drought.

Complicating the crisis are natural resource disputes: Sudan possesses vast gold reserves, and control over mining areas has become a flashpoint between the warring factions. Analysts say these economic factors further entrench the fighting, making peace harder to achieve.

The UAE, along with other international partners, has supported efforts to regulate gold exports and promote transparency to ensure that natural resources do not continue to fuel the conflict.

Path Forward: Diplomacy, Aid, and Accountability

Experts agree that an end to Sudan’s war will require a combination of sustained diplomacy, humanitarian aid, and accountability for atrocities. International actors are now focusing on four key priorities:

  1. Immediate Ceasefire: Halting violence and opening humanitarian corridors.
  2. Political Dialogue: Encouraging both factions to return to talks under African Union or Arab League mediation.
  3. Humanitarian Assistance: Expanding relief access, food aid, and refugee support.
  4. Post-War Reconstruction: Planning for long-term rebuilding once peace is achieved.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia, along with the United States, have previously hosted mediation sessions between Sudanese factions. Diplomatic sources suggest renewed talks could take place in late 2025 under a regional framework.

Hope Amid Despair

Despite the scale of destruction, Sudanese civil society groups continue to push for peace. Local mediators, women’s organizations, and youth networks are working to rebuild trust and reopen humanitarian routes.

The UAE and its partners in the Arab world have expressed readiness to support reconstruction once the guns fall silent. Aid packages, infrastructure support, and investment in agriculture and energy sectors could play a pivotal role in Sudan’s eventual recovery.

Conclusion: Time for Global Unity

The tragedy unfolding in Sudan is not just a national crisis — it is a global test of conscience.
The humanitarian suffering, ethnic tension, and regional instability demand unified international action, not division or blame.

With the UAE, African Union, and United Nations all emphasizing peace, diplomacy, and humanitarian access, there remains hope that a political solution can still emerge. For the millions of Sudanese civilians caught in the crossfire, the world’s commitment to dialogue and relief may be their only chance for survival.
